2010 Country Music Hall of Famer passed away FRI

9/10 by Jonathan West - Don Williams, the "Gentle Giant" and 2010 Country Music Hall of Famer passed away Friday in Mobile, Alabama at age 78. Born in the Texas Panhandle and raised near Corpus Cristi along the Gulf, Williams had 17 number one hits including this Alan Jackson cover that hit the top spot again 21 years later in 2000:
 
Don was a US Army veteran who also worked at his father's furniture store to make ends meet while chasing his dreams. Stephen L. Betts from Rolling Stone wrote:

"In 1980, Williams, who had quickly gained an overseas following, was named Artist of the Decade by the readers of the London-based magazine Country Music People...Williams was consistently an international ambassador of country music, earning a massive following in Europe, especially in the U.K. and Ireland, as well as Australia and Africa."

Besides this international appeal, he was also in a few movies including "Smokey and the Bandit 2" with Burt Reynolds. Don Williams was named the 1978 CMA Male Vocalist of the Year, and in the same year won the ACM award for this record:
