Moms are special people! My mom was my shopping partner, cooking instructor (although I must not have been paying attention), confidante and best friend.
We would spend hours on the phone talking about nothing. She was always there to listen and support me when I wasn't sure how to deal with things. She was so strong yet kind and funny -- just a lovely human being that I loved so much.
My mom is the reason I've become passionate about the importance of health screenings and early disease detection. For years before she was diagnosed with breast cancer, I hosted annual mammogram parties at my former radio station. My hope was to raise awareness and make this important screening a fun experience. Unknown to me, my own mom was not getting her annual mammogram. By the time I learned this, she was diagnosed with advanced breast cancer.
Now you understand this is a labor of love to me. I have one of the greatest jobs in the world and it' s not only because I play country music for a living.
It offers me a platform to encourage mothers and daughter to talk openly about these screenings and their health.
On May 12, 2018, I hosted the return of "Mammograms for Moms" with this fabulous group of ladies.
Thank you to Scripps Media, Ascension Columbia St. Mary's Hospital and The Explorium Brewpub for making this possible!
My goal is to make this an annual event.
